Dryden Central School District has received an American Rescue Plan grant to keep their high school open and fund the Lion In The Sun Summer Camp. Students are incoming 1st through 5th graders who have been selected by their teachers to join. This four week program focuses on a variety of topics including math and ELA.

This camp has provided a foundation for students to learn hands-on and stay active.

Students are encouraged to use Dryden’s pool, local walking trails and explore technology based activities provided by TST BOCES. Stephanie Burns, a coordinator for the camp alongside Charly Wojcik, gives some insight on how campers get to experience this type of learning in class, “In math, we use an activity called Math and Movement with Suzy Koontz. The students physically move their bodies on a big number grid. You can do a lot of different games with this and combine kinesthetic learning. It has been helpful, especially as students get used to doing multiples.” Another activity that is a big hit is the Solar Express. This award winning mobile library is a highlight for many as students can grab a book, a snack, and learn alongside teachers as they read together.

When it comes to student growth within this program, Burns has witnessed big improvements first hand, she shares, “Absolutely, there have been improvements! We had one little friend who was dealing with challenges socially and he struggled coming to school. Now he takes the bus and shows up to do everything asked of him. It is incredible and these kids are so happy to be here!” For those caregivers whose child is being considered for next year's camp, it is encouraged to join as soon as you can. “For anyone thinking about joining. I would say they should absolutely join,” says Burns, “The group sizes are smaller, the kids are learning in a fun way with an open curriculum and teachers are going at the kids' pace.” For more information please contact Cheryl Covell, Director of Curriculum and Instruction at (607) 844-5361 ext. 8 or at [email protected]
