Sixth grade students have Art every other day for two marking periods (12 weeks). We focus on the Elements and Principles of Art, incorporate English Language Arts, and relate to other subject classroom lessons whenever possible.
The first project we completed was a portfolio in which all two-dimensional artwork is stored throughout the 12 weeks.
We then read the Lewis Carroll poem Jabberwocky and looked at "nonsense" words. Students created their own nonsense word by combining parts of actual words that describe themselves. After reviewing and discussing why artists make self portraits, students created their own portraits in three layers - center of the image is a current portrait of themselves, the inner ring is a combination of words and images describing their current self, the outer ring a combination portraying their future self, and the background depicting things from their past which have helped make them the person they are today.
