Results 2017-2018

5/9/18 ~

Wednesday afternoon in an IAC match at Elm Tree Golf Course on a chamber-of-commerce day with temperatures in the mid-70’s and a light breeze, the Dryden Purple Lions beat Marathon by a score of 216 to 241.

Dryden freshman Connor Smith, playing on his 15th birthday, shot a career best 1-under-par 34 and earned medalist honors for the second time this year.   Smith overcame a double bogey on the fourth hole with birdies on the second, seventh and ninth holes.   Dryden sophomore Kody Ayers also reached a milestone in breaking 50 for the first time with a 49.

Marathon sophomore Diego Castellot continued his solid play, shooting 46 for the visitors as he moved into the top20 in stroke average in the entire IAC (out of 147 players) .

Dryden Coach Dave Hicks on his team’s performance  “There are a lot of young teams in our league, including us, and its great to see these kids improve each time they play.  I am excited for my kids to get a win today… but really for both of these teams and most others in our league, the real goal is developing young golfers so that the league will be deeper and stronger the next few years.  All of Marathon’s kids have improved at least 5 or 6 shots since last year… that’s impressive but not surprising given Chip’s success over the past 28 years.  As for Connor (Smith), he is starting to realize that he is capable of shooting really good scores and as his confidence grows he has the potential to be one of the best players in the league.,

Dryden (8-3) plays next on Thursday May 10 when they host Moravia in a battle that could decide 3rd place in the IAC North division.

Marathon (3-6) plays next on Thursday May 10 when they travel to Knickerbocker Golf Course to face Cincinnatus in a non-league match.

5/2/18 ~

Wednesday afternoon in an IAC match at Ford Hill Country Club’s Red Course on a warm, windy day with temperatures near 80, the Dryden Purple Lions beat the Whitney Point  by a score of 225  to 217.   Dryden fell to 5-3 while Whitney Point improved to 5-2 and strengthened their grip on second place in the IAC North Division.

Medalist Honors were shared by three players with scores of 4 over par 39 including Dryden Freshman Connor Smith who was medalist for the first time in his promising varsity career.  Smith played a steady round with 4 bogeys and five pars, narrowly missing on several birdie tries that would have given him outright medal honors.

Also Tying for medalist were Whitney Point senior Travis Minor and Dryden Sophomore Kevin Gardner.   Both players are widely considered two of the top players in the league.

Greg Ellis (46), Trystan Layton (43), and Holden Maslim (42) each shot or tied the best score of their varsity careers for Whitney Point and that was one of the big keys in their victory.

Coach Dave Hicks said of the narrow loss  “I have been very impressed with Coach Poyer’s team all year.  They have had several young players really emerge as excellent golfers and they are clearly one of the top teams in the league.  As for our team, I was pleased with the way we played.  We had one of our better rounds of the year, but facing a good team on their home course we knew it would be tough to win. Specifically, I was really excited by the way Connor (Smith) played today.   He is a very talented young player and gaining medalist honors today against two of the best players in the league may just be the springboard he needs to start shooting under 40 consistently.”

Dryden (5-3)  is off Thursday before travelling to King Ferry Golf Course to face Southern Cayuga Friday.

Whitney Point (5-2) hosts Moravia and Marathon in a tri-match at Ford Hill Country Club Thursday.
