Summary Code of Conduct

Rules and logical consequences provide our school with the means for setting the tone for classroom and school climate, expectations for students’ behavior, and the appropriate follow-through when rules are not followed.   While school personnel may implement and develop rules unique to their classroom, everyone within the school will benefit by following a school-wide framework for the Code of Conduct.   Consistency provides all children and adults in the building with a sense of safety and security.   It also enhances the spirit and cooperation of the total school community.

Each classroom teacher will generate and share with you in the fall newsletter specific classroom rules that stem from the school-wide summary Code of Conduct.   A general list of consequences and actions to promote self-control is outlined below:

Logical Consequences and Steps to Self-Control

1.      Students are given a reminder and redirection concerning inappropriate behavior in the classroom.

2.      Following the reminder, a fix-it strategy may be implemented, or a brief time-out or thinking time will be arranged in order for the student to grain self-control.

3.      If, during time out, the student continues to behave inappropriately, the student may be sent to a “buddy teacher” for a time out, after which the student will return to his or her classroom.

4.      Should a student become disruptive in the “buddy teachers’ room, the teacher will send for the principal or his/designee to remove the child from the room for a time out.   In reoccurring situations, the parents will be contacted.

5.      In extreme situations, where a student may be physically out of control, a teacher may remove the class from the situation.   At this time every effort will be made to contact the parent to retrieve the child.   Extreme threats of violent behavior will result in a suspension from school.   The principal or assistant principal in accordance with the Code of Conduct will determine the duration of the suspension.   Adults will use physical restraint only in instances where the physical well being of the children or adult is threatened.

6.      The above procedure is utilized for dangerous situations to enable a child to regain self-control in the shortest time possible.   Other logical consequences such as loss of privilege or an “apology of action” may be suitable for other misbehavior.   In such instances, teachers work with students to improve their behavior through these and other appropriate means that are reasonable and respectful of the child.

7.      For some children these steps to self-control may not be enough or may not be successful.   In such cases, specific behavior management plans may be developed with the knowledge and help of parents, teachers, specialists and administrators.
