1.  ANNOUNCEMENT OF VACANCY -   5/30/2013
TITLE/CATEGORY OF POSITION:  Director of Curriculum and Instruction (K-12)

POSITION OVERVIEW:
This posting will serve to fill the new12-month administrative position of Director of Curriculum and Instruction (DC&I), K-12 available due to administrative restructuring and creation at the 5/28/2013 Board meeting.  The 2013-14 assignment is District-wide, K-12.  The Director of Curriculum and Instruction will report directly to the Superintendent.  She/he will have a line relationship with each of the Directors and a staff relationship with each of the Principals and members of their staff.  Under the direction and supervision of the Superintendent, in harmony with the Board of Education policies, state laws, and Commissioner’s Regulations, the DC&I  shall be responsible for planning, development, implementation, directing, supervising, coordinating, evaluating, and analyzing the district level programs and personnel involved in curriculum development, instructional process and procedures as they relate to curriculum improvement, professional development, grant writing, and response to intervention.  The DC&I will study and report factors indicate the desirability of changes in the curriculum and methods of teaching to the superintendent.  It is expected that in addition to working with administrators, faculty groups, and committees, the DC&I may also at times have a one-to-one working relationship with instructional staff members at the teaching level.  The DC&I is also responsible for NYSED data reporting, verification and assuring that student assessment data drives decision-making in instruction and curriculum.  The DC&I will attend Board of Education meetings.  Will do related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: (minimum)
  • Valid NYS Education Department certification as a School District Administrator.
  • At least 5-years teaching with tenure, and 2-years administrative experience with tenure.
  • Knowledge of current education law regarding NYS standards, assessments, and instructional best practices.
  • Experience with developmentally appropriate practices and literacy development desired.
  • Ability to appropriately and effectively direct and align curriculum development among the District in accordance with the district’s philosophy, goals, objectives and priorities.
  • Ability to evaluate instructional programs and instructional effectiveness and to collaborate with building administration and/or Superintendent.
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership in assessing needs, planning, administering, and evaluating a multi-faceted in-service education program for all staff.
  • Ability to supervise the development of curriculum documents and related materials prepared by personnel in the District and ensure that all District and Board of Education processes, and state regulations are followed.
  • Excellent communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to accurately interpret policy, procedures, and data clearly.
  • Ability to work well with students and adults is necessary.
  • Good oral and written communication skills as well as good listening skills.
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
JOB GOAL:

Duties & Responsibilities: (minimum)
Curriculum and Instructional Leadership
  • Directs and coordinates instruction and curriculum to provide for continuity and articulation between schools on a K-12 basis.  
  • Demonstrates leadership in assessing needs, planning, administering, and evaluating a multi-faceted in-service education program for both the administrative and instructional staff.
  • Supervises the development of curriculum documents and related materials prepared by personnel in the District and ensures that all District curriculum is approved by the Board of Education in accordance with state regulations and District needs.
  • Ensure the use of technology in the teaching and learning process.
  • Plan the necessary time, resources and materials to support the accomplishment of educational goals.
  • Assists the superintendent in the development of District policies and regulations for the smooth implementation of the instructional program.
Professional Growth and Development
  • Directs district-wide program of curriculum and professional staff development to assure a well-balanced educational program.
  • Assists in the planning of in-service professional staff development, summer curriculum writing, and special study projects.
  • Designs strategies to continually improve and expand professional staff development for all employees.
  • May serve as the administrative liaison to the Dryden Teacher Center, TST BOCES Instructional Planning Council and other local, regional, college/university organization directly involved in curriculum improvement, in-service/staff development activities.
  • Demonstrates professional, responsible and ethical behavior.
Planning and Assessment
  • Assists the superintendent and other District administrators in establishing district priorities (short term and long term).
  • Assists in developing plans and strategies to coordinate and direct the energies of personnel in meeting the established District’s priorities, goals, and objectives.
  • Supervises and coordinates district planning committees in order to obtain representative views and recommendations for continued improvement of program, instructional and non-instructional alike.  Reviews these recommendations with Superintendent.
  • Collects, organizes, analyzes, and presents data for various required and necessary reports.
  • Data reporting will provide accurate and complete information for use in addressing District needs and in establishing priority areas for concentration of work energy and financial support.
  • Advise District administrators of mandates to be addressed, current educational research and areas of high interest, concern, or development.
School Organization & Climate
  • Use management practices that promote collegiality, teamwork, and collaborative decision making among the staff members.
  • Provide effective two-way communication channel with staff, community and Board of Education.
  • Assists in the development of curriculum guides, courses of study, handbooks, bulletins, reports, and public relations materials to broaden staff and community understanding of the Dryden Central School District.
  • Assist District administrators and staff in grant preparation and acquisition.
  • Represent District on committees, projects and activities locally and regionally as requested.
  • Complete reports for local, state, and federal agencies as may be requested by the Superintendent.
  • Articulate the school’s mission to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
  • Demonstrate skill in conflict resolution with administrators, parents, teachers, staff, and community.
  • Perform such additional duties as may be delegated by the Superintendent.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Maintain emotional control under stress.  Maintain positive attitude when dealing with staff, students, parents, and community members.  Work with frequent interruptions.  Frequent in-district and some statewide travel, frequent prolonged and irregular hours.
